There are two different types of metal roof applications: low-slope and steep-slope. There is only one type of metal roof system used in a low-slope system — structural metal panels. Structural metal panel roof systems are used for low slope roof systems because of their water retardant characteristics. Structural metal panel roof systems may also be installed for steep slope roof assemblies. Most structural metal panel roof systems are designed to resist the passage of water at the joints. One downfall to these applications is that condensation may develop on the underside of the metal roof panel. Conscientious thought should be taken when deciding on the other components of this type of system including the vapor retarder, insulation, and ventilation. Structural metal panel roof systems can be installed over a wide array of substrates, including concrete, wood, metal, etc.
