Asphalt or fiberglass composition roofs are readily available in many different styles and colors. They require very little maintenance and include a 25 year – Lifetime Manufacturers’ Warranty. These types of roof systems are the mostly commonly seen residential roofing systems within the United States.
Asphalt or fiberglass roofing shingles are relatively inexpensive. What may determine the cost of an asphalt composition roofing system include: geographical location, slope of the roof, height of the building, access to the premise, complexity of the project, the particular type of shingle, as well as numerous other factors.
Asphalt or fiberglass roofing shingles come in a variety of colors and styles, are fairly durable, and can be easily repaired and maintained.
Asphalt shingles are made with either glass fiber (AKA fiber glass). Fiberglass shingles have a glass fiber reinforcing mat manufactured to the shape of the shingle. This mat is then coated with asphalt which contains mineral fillers. The glass fiber mat is not waterproof by itself. Its purpose is for reinforcement. The asphalt what makes the glass fiber shingle waterproof is the asphalt. However, the asphalt itself will not stick to the mat. For this reason, “fillers” are used. The fillers in the asphalt cling to the glass fibers in the mat. The asphalt then encapsulates the glass fibers, fills all of the little holes and voids in the mat rendering it waterproof. After this cools a bit, an adhesive asphalt is used to cover the mat and the ceramic granules are then embedded.
The ceramic granules serve to main purposes. The primary reason is to protect the shingles from UV rays. The sun’s UV rays are very destructive to asphalt and cause it to deteriorate prematurely. The second and more noticeable basis for the granules is aesthetics. Asphalt shingles are available in a wide variety of colors to match almost any home or building or any type of scenery and/or landscape.
